BACK TO MAIN
first week
These sketchbooks document the 10 week period of the quarantine. I made a sketchbook every week and the result is an accurate representation of my ideas and thoughts in that period. The days are marked only by their names, without dates (my usual way of using a sketchbook), thereby only focussing on the book as a whole, or the week as a whole, instead of a normal sketchbook which you build over a longer period of time, maybe coming back and adding things.
The method conflated every plane of existence into one format or medium; recipes get the same recognition as essays. This felt right during a pandemic, because our lives too had been conflated; the bar, the school or the home all now take place on your screen. It is hard to discriminate one activity from the other, and in the sketchbooks I mirror this.
When does a crisis become normalcy? I started this series with the presumption that it would be a contained period of changed circumstances, but if those circumstances become part of our daily life, where do the sketchbooks go? Do they gradually dissolve into the correct areas (recipe book, drawing book, etc)? Or is this a new era, all sketchbooks from now on being post-quarantine?
