Repair entails destruction. Partial destruction at the least. One has to be sure that the repair will be worth the sacrifice of a loved object. One has to be sure they posses the skills necessary to make the reparation succeed. The dilemma is:
(either) keep something that cannot be utilised and is only good for its nostalgic value,
(or) take the leap and risk indefinitely destroying something one holds dear.
(or)

treating the object much more crudely than you would if you were using it.
suddenly this stranger is mistreating my shoe, an object I care for and treat with kindness.
